Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan window seats. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the seat is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

How we make window seats for Camberwell

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. When we visit in Camberwell, we will check the radiator and plan around it. If you are living with wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a bay with no furniture that fits, window seats made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Camberwell, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat, then assembled in place. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there’s no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters

  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work

Your questions about window seats in Camberwell

Is Camberwell in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. Camberwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

I live in a flat in Camberwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. We do not repair sashes or cills.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the fronts, panels and grilles of a window seat. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot where windows can gather condensation.

Birch plywood

A window seat needs to be sturdy. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. It’s also good for drawer boxes.

Making use of awkward spaces in Camberwell

Homes built before 1919 make up about 29% of the housing in the streets around Camberwell, with about 26% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Camberwell, 12 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Camberwell is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Giles, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Camberwell, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your children go to Mary Datchelor School or a school nearby, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St Giles' Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
