Fitted home offices in Camberwell

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Camberwell. People typically come to us about shelves that sag under books and files and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a flat, a desk built into a wall of bedroom storage uses space well, with shelves above and drawers below. With most households around Camberwell in purpose-built flats, one run of furniture doing two jobs can make sense. Cable routes are built in, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can suit a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.

Working from home in Camberwell

About 29% of the homes in the streets around Camberwell went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Camberwell, 12 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Camberwell is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Giles' Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Giles, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Brunswick Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Camberwell is about 1 mile south of East Dulwich, within the London Borough of Southwark. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Camberwell included. Camberwell is one of the places in Southwark where we make fitted home offices, and the borough has 21 places on our list.

Camberwell sits close to the A202 and B214, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also make fitted home offices in nearby places such as Bermondsey (2 miles north), Elephant and Castle (2 miles north), Bankside (2 miles north), Southwark (2 miles north), St George's Fields (2 miles north-west) and Rotherhithe (3 miles north-east).

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. We size them for what you told us you’d store.

Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Mop up spills quickly. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Camberwell?

Yes, we work across Southwark, Camberwell included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Camberwell?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. We will look at the options at the measuring visit.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Honest limits

Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Building a loft conversion, which isn’t our work

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
