Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so the room has to fit the units. Ours are made to fit the room from wall to wall. Standard furniture doesn’t allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, leaving gaps or blocking access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

About our bespoke kitchens in Camberwell

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. People normally come to us about a central island in a larger kitchen and a kitchen planned around your appliances, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a block, the pipes and risers in a kitchen are usually fixed in place. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Camberwell, the cabinets are planned around those fixed points, keeping access where it’s needed. Other trades handle the plumbing and electrics.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A common reason is a room that ready-made units do not fit. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room from the start.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • An island where space allows
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • More storage in a small kitchen

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Giles, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Pricing bespoke kitchens in Camberwell

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many kitchen doors and panels, as it stays stable and takes paint well.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted kitchen can be refreshed over time.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Camberwell

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Camberwell were built before 1919 (about 29%) and since 2000 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Camberwell Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Camberwell. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Southwark included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Camberwell is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Denmark Hill station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Mansion House, about 2.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Camberwell is about 1 mile south of East Dulwich, part of the London Borough of Southwark. We can visit homes in Camberwell on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Across Southwark, we cover Camberwell, along with the rest of the borough.

Every home in SE5, SE15, SE22 and SE24 is covered for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. We cover homes on streets like New Church Road, Camberwell Station Road and Addington Square, along with the roads around them, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Camberwell is near the A202 and B214; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in Denmark Hill (1 mile south), East Dulwich (1 mile south), Walworth (1 mile north), Peckham (1 mile east) and Herne Hill (1 mile south). Across the rest of Southwark, our area takes in Bermondsey (2 miles north), Elephant and Castle (2 miles north), Bankside (2 miles north), Southwark (2 miles north), St George's Fields (2 miles north-west) and Rotherhithe (3 miles north-east).

Questions from Camberwell

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Camberwell?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Kitchens are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Camberwell?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

How much time does fitting need?

It depends on the kitchen. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

What does a bespoke kitchen cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the number of units and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
