FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Camberwell

Does a conservation area in or near Camberwell affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Camberwell?

Yes. Camberwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Camberwell

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. If your home has long and double hanging planned around your clothes and somewhere for shoes to live, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With most households around Camberwell in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. In a mansion block, bedrooms often keep their chimney breasts and tall ceilings, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. Either way, walk-in wardrobes are fixed to suit the wall.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Bedroom storage in Camberwell

Homes built before 1919 make up about 29% of the housing in the area around Camberwell, with about 26% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Camberwell include Church of St Giles (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Camberwell Public Baths (Grade II), under half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. In Camberwell, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

If your children go to Mary Datchelor School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Living in a block of flats near Denmark Hill station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a dressing room need to stay straight, and birch plywood suits them.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Some people want a calmer bedroom. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room

For an older house near St Giles' Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.
