Fitted wardrobes for homes in Camberwell
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. Most enquiries start with no space in front for doors to swing and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Camberwell, so bedroom space is often tight and every wall counts. Fitted furniture can be planned floor to ceiling, so storage goes up rather than out. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors, then put together in the room.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The width and height of the space
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Before the design visit
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Camberwell?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Camberwell?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you work outside London?
No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

About 29% of the homes in the streets around Camberwell went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Camberwell include Church of St Giles (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Camberwell Public Baths (Grade II), less than half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Purpose-built flats are home to about 67% of households in the streets around Camberwell, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Living in a block of flats near Denmark Hill station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near St Giles' Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 2.7 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturdays can be arranged.

Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
