Deptford Window Seats

In Deptford, we design window seats around the room you actually have. We design your window seat at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • An empty bay that doesn’t get used

How we make window seats for Deptford

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, usually with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. For a home in Deptford, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and discuss the design. If you’re living with no space for toys and games and wanting a quiet place to read, that is what window seats are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. Around Deptford, where most households live in purpose-built flats, that’s worth thinking about early. A shallow cupboard in a hall or a seat with drawers can hold a surprising amount.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

The problems window seats solve

Storage is another big reason. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage without taking up more of the floor.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light

If you live in a flat close to Deptford station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Fixing the window itself
  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Window seats in Deptford: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Deptford were built since 2000 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Deptford, 12 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Newer homes are more common around Deptford than across Lewisham: about 34% date from 2000 onwards, against about 17%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1 mile east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For a family home near Tidemill Academy, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Deptford is about 1 mile south-west of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. We cover Deptford as part of our work across Lewisham. We list Deptford among 22 places we cover in Lewisham.

Every home in SE8, SE10 and SE14 is covered for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You’ll find streets here such as Mill Lane, Dixon Road and Clare Road, and we cover homes on all of them for window seats. Deptford is near the A2209; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. Other places close to Deptford include New Cross (1 mile south-west), St Johns (1 mile south), Millwall (1 mile north), Isle of Dogs (1 mile north-east) and North Greenwich (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Lewisham, we also cover Catford (3 miles south), Sydenham (4 miles south), Hither Green (2 miles south-east), Crofton Park (2 miles south), Perry Vale (3 miles south) and Brockley (2 miles south). Being one of the larger places in Lewisham, Deptford is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Your questions about window seats in Deptford

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Deptford?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat isn’t trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent ahead of time. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. A bench in a bay leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space at the corners. A seat made for the window follows every angle. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat

Once the seat is fitted, it is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid placing heavy objects on the painted surfaces while it hardens.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it is best for things that don’t mind it.
