About window seats in Croydon
Cushions are not something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a bay window that’s hard to furnish and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste.
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
- First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like.
- At the design visit, every side of the window is measured. Then we discuss the seat height and storage.
- We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a quote in writing.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
What goes into your quote
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

Starting with a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Around Thornton Heath
Around Thornton Heath, we cover homes near Prince George pub, Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls and The Archbishop Lanfranc School, among other places. You will also find Winterbourne Junior Girls' School (within half a mile west), Grangewood Park (0.8 miles east) and Church of St Stephen (a few minutes’ walk west). Thornton Heath has its own railway station: Thornton Heath station. A little further out are Crystal Palace Museum (1.9 miles north-east) and Centrale Croydon (1.7 miles south). For a walk, there is Biggin Wood.
Fitted storage across Croydon
Homes across Croydon are full of odd corners, from stair voids to loft eaves. Each design is made to the space itself, then made at our workshop and fitted.
The biggest shares of homes in Croydon were built before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 6 of the 32 places in Croydon with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Croydon included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.
Thornton Heath: If your children go to Winterbourne Junior Girls' School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.
The problems window seats solve
For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It helps keep the room tidy.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use
- A recess under the window doing nothing
- Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
- Wanting a quiet place to read
Pricing window seats in Croydon
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
- The overall size of the piece
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
What to send when you contact us
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Approximate measurements of the space
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Seats take weight every day, so they need to be strong. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly. It suits the drawers below too.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the seat is in place. It is easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Questions we are often asked
Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?
The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you do not need every day, while drawers mean you do not have to move the cushion.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. We set the seat below the cill, so the sash still works. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Can you build a window seat over a radiator?
Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that is work for your plumber.
