Window Seats in Ealing
Planning window seats for a home in Ealing? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.
- Unused space below a sash window
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- A bay window that’s hard to furnish
Window seats designed for your room
Window seats in Ealing: what you get
We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Ealing. If your home has no comfortable place to sit in the light and a nursery or bedroom short of storage, that is what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Ealing, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You contact us with a few details about the bay or recess.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Advice
The problems window seats solve
Storage is another big reason. Under the seat there is room for blankets, toys, books and more. It adds storage without taking up more of the floor.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Looking for a reading spot by the window
- A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
- A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
- An empty bay that does not get used
For families living near Ealing Independent College, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight

What else we make in Ealing
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ealing?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
I live near Ealing Broadway station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What materials do you use for window seats?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?
Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Check whether there is a radiator under the window
- Consider adding shelving around the seat
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
Once the seat is fitted, it is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.
Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Dry any water on the paint promptly.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
We scribe each seat to follow the walls and floor, so it fits neatly at the walls and floor. A ready-made piece sits in the space rather than being part of it. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Window seats for homes in Ealing
In the streets around Ealing, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Ealing is in the Ealing Green Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Around Ealing, about 56% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for the rest of London as a whole, about 28%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

What affects the price in Ealing
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How square the room is
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
What we need to know
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you are after
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
