How fitting works for window seats

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Window seats in Acton Green

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the whole wall looks considered. We can go through the options when we visit in Acton Green. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a radiator that makes the space hard to use and a bay with no furniture that fits.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Acton Green, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for the frame, the seat and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Next to a cold window, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a good choice. It gives a smooth base for paint, and holds its shape in the bay.

What prompts window seats in Acton Green

In a period home, a window seat can suit the character of the room. Painted to suit the room, it can sit with the original features. It suits anyone who wants new furniture to sit well in a period room.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Needing more storage in the room
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it

For a family home near Ark Priory Primary Academy, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, use our contact form.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

To get a quote for window seats in Acton Green, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Storage in Acton Green homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Acton Green were built before 1919 (about 51%) and since 2000 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 154 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Acton Green. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and window seats can be designed to work around them. About 45% of households in the streets around Acton Green live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For an older house near All Saints, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. Near listed buildings like Church of St Michael and All Angels, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre of Acton Green, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

FAQs: window seats in Acton Green

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Acton Green?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make window seats for a home in Acton Green?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London, and Acton Green is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

How is a window seat priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you do not have to move the cushion.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
