Window seats for homes in Little Portugal
Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the lines and the finish match. We can discuss the options when we visit in Little Portugal. Most enquiries start with wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and no space for toys and games; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Most households around Little Portugal live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage typically goes. Window seats are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Little Portugal?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
I live near Wandsworth Road station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
Which materials go into your window seats?
The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Why bespoke in Little Portugal?
Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Standard furniture doesn’t allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Fitted furniture is built around them.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Little Portugal

- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Made for your room, not a standard size

Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
- Tell us about the radiator before we visit
We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. That way, everything works as planned.
Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.
What affects the cost of window seats
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Parking near your home
- How big the furniture is
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- How you want to use the space
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it is worth checking with the managing agent ahead of time. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.
- First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
- We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows. Take your time with it.
- The seat is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
How to prepare
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It’s applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
