Window seats in Norwood New Town

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Window seats in Norwood New Town: what you get

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. Most enquiries start with wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Norwood New Town, door styles are talked through at the measuring visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions from Norwood New Town

I live near Gipsy Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Norwood New Town?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Why bespoke in Norwood New Town?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece can’t. Which suits you depends on your plans. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies at the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the seat is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. It suits a seat that sees daily use.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels and radiator grilles. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It forms most of the visible parts.

Storage in Norwood New Town homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Norwood New Town, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 30%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your children go to Rockmount Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
