Window seats in Golders Green: what you get

Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that are not quite straight. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It is a job that suits bespoke work, in Golders Green or anywhere else. People normally come to us about a period room that needs furniture to suit it and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older homes like many around Golders Green have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around Golders Green date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

FAQs: window seats in Golders Green

My house in Golders Green is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Golders Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the window, including any radiator under it.
  2. We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor.

Advice

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf benches aren’t designed to sit over a radiator. Put in front of one, they can trap the heat. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

How it is made

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. You’ll need to move any cushion to open it, so it is best for occasional storage.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can echo the woodwork in a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.

What affects the price in Golders Green

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
