Window seats for homes in North Harrow
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around North Harrow were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and before 1919 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of North Harrow is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Harrow sets its own rules. If your road in North Harrow falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Harrow-on-the-Hill station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Headstone Manor, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. If you live near Headstone Manor Recreation Ground, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Window seats for homes in North Harrow
In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that aren’t quite straight. We measure every face and scribe the seat to follow them, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It is a job that suits bespoke work, in North Harrow or anywhere else. If your home has a period room that needs furniture to suit it and nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around North Harrow, it’s worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Your questions about window seats in North Harrow
Do you cover homes near Harrow-on-the-Hill station?
Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in North Harrow?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Pricing window seats in North Harrow
The price for your room depends on:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How big the furniture is
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you are after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and describe the window.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
- On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Getting a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice

Not everything around window seats is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
- Painting the walls of the bay
- Fixing the window itself
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
