Window seats designed for your room

Window seats for homes in Greenhill

A window seat turns the light by a window into a place to sit. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. In Greenhill, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If your home has a bay with no furniture that fits and off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window, that is what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Greenhill were built since 2000, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. For lofts, the storage goes into spaces that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What affects the price in Greenhill

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking near your home
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Greenhill

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow-on-the-Hill station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

It depends on what you’ll store and how often you’ll reach for it. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you do not need every day, while drawers mean you do not have to move the cushion.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. We do not repair sashes or cills.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What prompts window seats in Greenhill

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. It’s worth talking to us before decorating, so the work can be timed sensibly. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.

We are often asked to help with:

  • No space for toys and games
  • An empty bay that doesn’t get used
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay

Close to Northwick Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street

Greenhill homes and window seats

About 45% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Greenhill went up since 2000, and about 22% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Greenhill. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Harrow sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Baptist, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. Near listed buildings like Granada Cinema, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Greenhill, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Greenhill is about 1 mile south-west of Harrow, in the London Borough of Harrow. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Greenhill is part of that. Our work takes in places right across Harrow.

How fitting works for window seats

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the window. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

How it’s made

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it’s best for occasional storage.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the seat is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps on a well-used seat.
