Window seats for homes in Pinner Green

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat isn’t trapped. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. When we visit in Pinner Green, we will check the radiator and plan around it. If you’re living with looking for a reading spot by the window and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator, that is what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

An interwar house usually has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Pinner Green, it is worth looking up as well as down. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Before the design visit

These details help when you contact us:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Is it time for window seats?

Parents often want a window seat for a child’s room, with toy storage below. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It also keeps the floor clear.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • An empty bay that doesn’t get used
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat

If your home is one of the older houses near Christian Science Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Pinner Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Pinner Green?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Is the cushion included with the window seat?

No, we make the seat itself, and the cushion is something you source separately. You’ll have the measurements to pass to a cushion maker. That way, you choose the fabric and style.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What is a window seat made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

How fitting day works

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
