Window seats for homes in West Green

In the neighbourhood around West Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 61%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of West Green, Historic England’s list includes Parish Church of St Ann (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Haringey are set locally. Depending on your street in West Green, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

For an older house near St Philip the Apostle, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For a flat near Seven Sisters station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Bruce Castle, about 1.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Window seats in West Green: what you get

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. If your home has a radiator under the window getting in the way and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay, that is what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around West Green date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How fitting works for window seats

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You tell us about the window and the room.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured. Then we discuss the seat height and storage.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows. Take your time with it.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Why bespoke in West Green?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What window seats can’t fix

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • Work on the window frame or glass
  • Fabric covers and cushions

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles
  • Lift-up lids or drawers

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Your questions about window seats in West Green

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

I live in a flat in West Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Which materials go into your window seats?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The gaps are kept even all along.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
