Stroud Green homes and window seats

Homes built before 1919 make up about 73% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Stroud Green, with about 9% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Stroud Green include Hornsey Town Hall (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles west, and The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Stroud Green (about 73%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age, and they’re natural places for a window seat, with a grille where there is a radiator below.

If your children go to St Aidan's Voluntary Controlled Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Witanhurst, about 1.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Window seats in Stroud Green: what you get

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, typically with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. In Stroud Green, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If you are living with wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Stroud Green date from then. Window seats are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Is it time for window seats?

A quiet place to read is a common wish. A seat by the window, with books nearby, makes a natural reading corner. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • Needing more storage in the room

If you live near Stationers Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
  • Let us know about parking near your home

We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Wipe away condensation from the window before it runs onto the seat. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Don’t leave water sitting on the painted surface.

Common questions about window seats

Do you make window seats for homes in Stroud Green?

Yes. Stroud Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Haringey and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit window seats to the uneven walls of an older house in Stroud Green?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What is a window seat made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
  2. We visit to measure the window and go through the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. You receive a written quote for the seat we have discussed, for you to look over.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
