Fitted home offices in Stroud Green: what you get

A spare room often makes the best home office, particularly if it still needs to work as a guest room. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Stroud Green. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about glare from a window on the screen and a laptop that moves from room to room.

Around Stroud Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms typically have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with some details about the space, including the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office we’ve discussed.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, sized for the room and the route in, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Advice

FAQs: fitted home offices in Stroud Green

Is parking a problem for fitting in Stroud Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Stroud Green?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What does a built-in desk cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. Leave knee room in the middle. The design visit settles the layout.

Doors and drawer fronts

Cupboard doors hide the clutter of working life. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. When you finish, the doors close on work.

Home working in Stroud Green: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Stroud Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 73%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 9%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Stroud Green, Historic England’s list includes Hornsey Town Hall (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles west, and The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Close to Stationers Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Do you need fitted home offices in Stroud Green?

Some homes have an tricky space that could become an office. Standard desks seldom fit an alcove or a slope. A built-in desk makes the space useful.

Requests we hear often include:

  • No proper place to work from home
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • A screen that is hard to read by the window
  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day

For a flat near Harringay station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

What we don’t do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Setting up computers, screens or networks
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.
