Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Window seats in West Twyford

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers mean you don’t have to move a cushion to reach things. We will talk through which suits the way you use the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay and a bay with no furniture that fits; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around West Twyford, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Advice

Common questions about window seats

How do you fit window seats in a flat in West Twyford?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near West Twyford affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Why bespoke in West Twyford?

Standard storage benches come in set sizes. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Why choose us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement

What window seats cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
  • Painting the walls of the bay

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Radiator grilles
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there is a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It is finished like the rest of the seat. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.
