DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Window seats in Park Royal: what you get

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. In Park Royal, the design visit is where the details are settled. If you’re living with unused space below a sash window and a nursery or bedroom short of storage, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Park Royal date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the seat.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before we arrive

Advice

Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

Drawers under a window seat are easy to reach, even with a cushion on top. They’re ideal for everyday items. We size the drawers to suit the seat.

Doors and drawer fronts

What shows of the seat is mainly its fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. Where needed, a grille is part of the front.

Questions from Park Royal

I live near Harlesden station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in Park Royal. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens during the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do you need window seats in Park Royal?

After a room has been redecorated, a window seat can finish it off. Mention any decorating plans at the measuring visit so the timing works. Decorating itself is for your decorator.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay

For a flat near Harlesden station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Pricing window seats in Park Royal

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
