About our window seats in Chelsea Harbour
Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Chelsea Harbour is the same. Most enquiries start with a bay window that’s hard to furnish and nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Most homes around Chelsea Harbour are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Making use of awkward spaces in Chelsea Harbour
Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Chelsea Harbour, with about 28% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 28 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Chelsea Harbour. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 28% of homes in the streets around Chelsea Harbour were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are usually plasterboard on studs, so window seats are designed with fixings to suit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. If you live near Imperial Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
Chelsea Harbour is about 1 mile west of Fulham, part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Homes in Chelsea Harbour are part of the area we cover for window seats. We cover places right across Hammersmith and Fulham.
We make window seats across SW6, SW11 and SW10. Whether you live on a street such as Ann Lane, York Road and Lots Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for window seats. When you need someone else
Not everything around window seats is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
- Fixing the window itself
- Electrical work around the seat
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.
- First you let us know about the bay or window where you’d like a seat, including any radiator under it.
- We visit to measure the window and talk through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
- Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps on a well-used seat.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers can run the full width or be combined with a lid. Where there’s a radiator, the drawers are planned around it. We agree the layout at the measuring visit.
Is bespoke worth it?
One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece cannot. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Big standalone units do not always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Why us?
- Scribed to uneven walls

- Built around your room

Flats, conversions and lettings
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Common questions about window seats
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Chelsea Harbour?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Is Chelsea Harbour in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes, Chelsea Harbour is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Will a window seat work below a sash window?
Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. We don’t repair sashes or cills.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
