Alcove units in Leyton Grange
An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are everyday clutter left on show and bare alcoves beside the fireplace.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and they set the lines that alcove units have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Leyton Grange, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Why bespoke in Leyton Grange?
In fairness, standalone furniture comes with you when you move. Fitted alcove units stay with the house and are left behind when you go. Which suits you depends on your plans. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What you get with us

How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, so you can look it over in your own time.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
- We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves.
Before we arrive
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Arranging a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Alcove units for homes in Leyton Grange
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Leyton Grange were built before 1919 (about 63%) and since 2000 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Leyton Grange. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Leyton Grange (about 63%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Most London houses of that age have chimney breasts with an alcove either side in the main rooms, the classic place for alcove units, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, less than half a mile east of the centre of Leyton Grange, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Riverley Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Is it time for alcove units?
For some, it’s about books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with shelf heights and depths to suit.
Here’s what alcove units can help with:
- Alcoves that are not square
- Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
- Alcoves that are wasted space
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
If you live in a flat close to Leyton Midland Road station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you choose who makes it
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
- Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
- Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted units typically need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, which can dull or mark the paint. Wipe it dry when you have finished.
Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.
Questions we’re often asked
Is Leyton Grange in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. Leyton Grange is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
My home in Leyton Grange is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards. We’ll plan the desk around how you work.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What alcove units cannot fix
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Any structural work on the chimney breast
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
