  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture

Loft storage in Little Portugal

Why bespoke in Little Portugal?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Loft storage in Little Portugal: what you get

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We’ll go through the options in Little Portugal. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are nowhere to store bags and boxes and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs.

One flat can have concrete, block and plasterboard walls side by side. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Little Portugal, each wall is checked before fixings are chosen. On a stud wall, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are tied back.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What prompts loft storage in Little Portugal

A sloping ceiling makes a standard wardrobe impossible. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It is often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom

Close to Larkhall Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What to check before you book

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make loft storage for homes in Little Portugal?

Yes, we work across Lambeth, Little Portugal included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wandsworth Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. We measure the way up as well as the room. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Fitted storage in Little Portugal

In the streets around Little Portugal, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 31%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 165 entries within half a mile of the centre of Little Portugal. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Stephen's Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. If you live in a flat close to Wandsworth Road station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What affects the price in Little Portugal

What you pay depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you’re after

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
