Bespoke Kitchens in Little Portugal

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Little Portugal starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances

Little Portugal homes and bespoke kitchens

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Little Portugal were built before 1919 (about 31%) and since 2000 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 165 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Little Portugal. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Christ Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Wandsworth Road station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Little Portugal is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 1 mile south of Stockwell. From period terraces to newer flats in Little Portugal, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Little Portugal is one of the places in Lambeth where we make bespoke kitchens, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

Every address in SW9, SW8 and SW1P is covered for bespoke kitchens. Our area takes in homes on streets like Kay Road, Lett Road and Rita Road, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Little Portugal include the A203. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in South Lambeth (1 mile north), North Brixton (1 mile east), Stockwell (1 mile south), Kennington (1 mile north) and Oval (1 mile north). We also make bespoke kitchens in nearby places such as Streatham (3 miles south), West Norwood (3 miles south), South Bank (2 miles north), Waterloo (2 miles north), Gipsy Hill (4 miles south-east) and Streatham Hill (2 miles south).

Bespoke kitchens in Little Portugal

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. Most enquiries start with spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets and cabinets for a narrow kitchen, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most households around Little Portugal live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, the kitchen is often small or open to the living space. A bespoke kitchen can use the full width and height of the walls. Everything is built in sections that fit the route into the flat.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Little Portugal

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Little Portugal?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wandsworth Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent ahead of time. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through the layout, storage and finish, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out, for you to read through.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register do the plumbing, electrics and gas.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Little Portugal

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen island with room around it

For a family home near Platanos College, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that isn’t flat, closing any gaps.

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cabinets arrive finished, which keeps work in your home to fitting.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Building work, such as removing walls
  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
