Wall beds for your home in Vauxhall

How we make wall beds for Vauxhall

A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. If you’re living with a spare room that’s rarely slept in and a study that doubles as a spare room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around Vauxhall were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Common questions about wall beds

Do you make wall beds for homes in Vauxhall?

Yes, Vauxhall is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lambeth and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How much space does a wall bed need?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the measuring visit and plan the layout around it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Is a wall bed safe?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Bedroom storage in Vauxhall

In the streets around Vauxhall, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Vauxhall. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.

For families living near Vauxhall Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Close to Old Paradise Gardens? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Vauxhall is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 2 miles south of Stockwell. Anywhere in Vauxhall, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Vauxhall is one of the places in Lambeth where we make wall beds, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

Every address in SE11, SW1P and SW8 is covered for wall beds. You’ll find streets here such as Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road, and we cover homes on all of them for wall beds. What we do not do

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Making good the walls after other work

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Do you need wall beds in Vauxhall?

Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

Wall beds can help with:

  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

Near listed buildings like Woodstock Court, under half a mile east of the centre of Vauxhall, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before we arrive

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Looking after your furniture

People planning wall beds often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
