Walk-in wardrobes in Angel
Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
I live in a flat in Angel. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Angel?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?
In many homes, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers and still leave room to move. We will measure and plan it during the design visit.
Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
How we make walk-in wardrobes for Angel
Lighting makes a big difference in a dressing room, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there is space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. People typically come to us about hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and a built-in dressing table; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. With most households around Angel in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Top cupboards suit things you need only now and then.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Caring for painted furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:
- Count your shoes before the design visit
- Plan lighting with your electrician
- Measure how much long hanging you need
- Keep the room ventilated
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.
Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. Wiring is their work, not ours, and the units can be designed around the lighting.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Angel
Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
- Somewhere for shoes to live
Living in a block of flats near London Kings Cross station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- How parking will work on your street
- A written quote that sets out the job
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Empty the space we will be working in

Advice
Angel homes and walk-in wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Angel were built before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Angel is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.
Dr Johnson's House, about 1.2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For a family home near St John Evangelist RC Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
