Built-in bookshelves in Angel, Islington
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Angel, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Shelves that suit a period room

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Angel
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and shelving behind a desk for books and files; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Angel, so living rooms often double as dining rooms or home offices. Built-in bookshelves can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run. Fixings are matched to the wall, whether it’s solid or plasterboard.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.
Before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Arranging a design visit
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
What else we make in Angel
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. Ready-made units cannot follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
Why us?
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Angel
Working from home is another reason. Shelves for books and files close to the desk make the day easier. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Room for a record collection
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
Living in a block of flats near London Kings Cross station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
What to check before you book
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Will the quote be in writing?
- How parking will work on your street
Questions from Angel
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Angel?
Yes. Angel is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
I live in a flat in Angel. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?
Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that typically goes unused and can frame a window seat.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit, adding a lip or support on longer runs. Spreading heavy books helps too.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a written quote after the design visit.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
