How we make bespoke kitchens for South Bank
Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen that fits an uneven room and a kitchen planned around your appliances.
In a block, the pipes and risers in a kitchen are normally fixed in place. With purpose-built flats home to most households around South Bank, the cabinets are planned around those fixed points. Plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it is worth checking with the managing agent in advance. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Arranging a design visit
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

Kitchens in South Bank homes
About 36% of the homes in the area around South Bank went up before 1919, and about 32% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of South Bank is in the South Bank Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.
For an older house near St John's Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. The wider area includes historic houses such as Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Near listed buildings like Royal Festival Hall, under half a mile north of the centre of South Bank, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Is bespoke worth it?
Standard cabinets come in set widths, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes from wall to wall. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, so storage is lost at the top. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in South Bank
Does a conservation area in or near South Bank affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in South Bank?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Where is the furniture made?
We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the measuring visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What we do not do
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Any work on the gas supply
- Plumbing, which is for your plumber
- Knocking through or rebuilding walls
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
