How we make bespoke kitchens for Bickley

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet giving a level line for the worktop you choose. If you’re living with cabinets for a narrow kitchen and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls, kitchens made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Wherever your home in Bickley sits in London’s mix of housing, a bespoke kitchen starts with measuring the room. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built into the design. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Check there’s room around an island before planning one
  • Make a note of what you use every day

Once the kitchen is fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is enough.

Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, especially on a colder external wall.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Bickley

I live near Bickley station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the kitchen. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Larders and dressers
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so tell us what applies during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Kitchens in Bickley: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Bickley, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Bickley, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in the neighbourhood around Bickley, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have long, narrow kitchens, which suits cabinets made to the exact width.

If you live near Jubilee Country Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. Living in a block of flats near Bickley station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Bullers Wood School for Boys, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How big the furniture is

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
