Window seats in Bickley

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Bickley, the design visit is where the details are settled. If your home has a bay with no furniture that fits and a radiator under the window getting in the way, that’s what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Homes in an area like Bickley can come from many different periods, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. Window seats are designed for the space you have. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Making use of awkward spaces in Bickley

Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Bickley, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Bickley Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Bickley. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Bickley joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Living in a block of flats near Bickley station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For families living near Bullers Wood School for Boys, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Your questions about window seats in Bickley

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bickley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you cover homes near Bickley station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. Space is left around the radiator too. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

What materials do you use for window seats?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf benches are not designed to sit over a radiator. Put in front of one, they can trap the heat. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

The problems window seats solve

For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It helps keep the room tidy.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light

If you live in a period home close to Church of St George, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

How to choose a carpenter in London

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
