Your questions about fitted cupboards in Bickley

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Bickley?

Yes, Bickley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Bickley station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Fitted cupboards in Bickley

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are using the full height of a room and cupboards that suit a period house.

Wherever your home in Bickley sits in London’s mix of housing, there’s usually a space that could work harder. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it is finished before fitting day.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade suits damper rooms.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we’ve agreed.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

The usual reason is simple: there’s too much stuff and not enough storage. Coats pile up on the newel post, shoes gather by the door and the vacuum lives in a corner. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • Using the full height of a room
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bromley Palace, about 1.1 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Fitted storage in Bickley

About 33% of the homes in the area around Bickley went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Bickley Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Bickley. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Bromley included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Bickley, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St George, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Bickley, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St George, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.
