Bespoke kitchens in Sundridge: what you get

Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, sized to what you keep in them. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. If your home has a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets, that’s what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two kitchens have quite the same walls and floors. Every cabinet is levelled and scribed so the lines run straight. The carcasses are moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, with the finish agreed in your quote.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

Made-to-measure kitchens in Sundridge

About 33% of the homes in the area around Sundridge went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Sundridge. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. If your street in Sundridge is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Quernmore Secondary School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Elmstead Wood? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which appeals if you’re staying put. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up over the years.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets

For a flat near Sundridge Park station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Deep pan drawers need a strong box, and birch plywood suits them.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many kitchen doors and panels, because it copes with a room that gets warm and steamy.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions from Sundridge

Does a conservation area in or near Sundridge affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Sundridge Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we check this at the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and usually cost less and they suit many newer homes. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. Bespoke is a bigger investment, built around the space you have. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
