Cranford Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Cranford starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Tall larder storage
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Wiring for appliances and lights

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Cranford

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. If you’re living with a layout for a small or awkward room and more storage in a small kitchen, that’s what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A good part of the housing around Cranford is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today, with an island where space allows.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Kitchens in Cranford: local notes

In the streets around Cranford, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Cranford, Historic England’s list includes Stansfield House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Cranford is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a family home near Cranford Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. If you live in a period home close to The Parish Church of the Good Shepherd, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Cranford

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • A layout for a small or tricky room
  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • Extra cupboard space
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls

The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 2.6 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cranford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Cranford?

Yes. Cranford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You let us know about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift. Tell us about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Mention any parking or lift rules

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Think about how the cabinets will get in. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.
