Bespoke kitchens in St Margarets: what you get

Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, sized to what you keep in them. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cabinets built around the appliances you choose and cabinets for a narrow kitchen.

Moving a sink or cooker means moving pipes and cables, which is a job for other trades. Whatever kind of home you have in St Margarets, we plan the layout with that in mind. Any changes to plumbing, electrics or gas are for your plumber, electrician or a Gas Safe engineer.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Bespoke kitchens in St Margarets: local notes

In the streets around St Margarets, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of St Margarets is in the St Margaret's Estate Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Richmond upon Thames sets its own rules. If your road in St Margarets falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Richmond House, about 1 mile south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Close to Richmond Green? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

St Margarets is about 1 mile south-west of Twickenham, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. We design and make bespoke kitchens for homes in St Margarets and the rest of Richmond upon Thames. We cover places right across Richmond upon Thames, large and small.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker
  • Structural changes to the room

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Larders and dressers

What affects the price in St Margarets

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, especially around the sink and dishwasher. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Line up your other trades in good time. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, and it’s easier when everyone works from the same design.

Questions we are often asked

My home in St Margarets is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in St Margarets?

Yes, St Margarets is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What are your kitchens made from?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours you choose.

Can you fit a kitchen in a room with uneven walls?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in St Margarets

In many older homes, ready-made units struggle with lean and slope. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls

For a family home near Worple Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
