Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in
  • Deal with damp walls first

Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colours used.

Measure the route into the kitchen as well as the room. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Mortlake

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets and tall larder storage.

Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. With a large share of the homes around Mortlake dating from then, each wall is checked before deciding where heavy cabinets go. Where a wall will not carry the weight, open shelves or tall floor-standing cupboards can take over.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

About 58% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Mortlake went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Mortlake

Does a conservation area in or near Mortlake affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Mortlake station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

People also want a kitchen that is built to last and can be repainted, which appeals if you’re staying put. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up later on.

Here’s what bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Tall larder storage
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room

Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Mortlake, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • New sockets or circuits
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
