Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

About our walk-in wardrobes in Furzedown

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. If you’re living with long and double hanging planned around your clothes and turning a box room into a dressing room, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Around Furzedown, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What to send when you contact us

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Why bespoke in Furzedown?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Why us?

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Furzedown

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Furzedown?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Furzedown?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

It is your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Advice

When you need someone else

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Electrical work in the room
  • Advice on your lease

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shoe storage
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Dressing table
  • Hand-painted finish

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Bedrooms in Furzedown: local notes

About 65% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Furzedown went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Furzedown. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Furzedown (about 65%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe.

For a flat near Tooting station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Graveney School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
