Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Streatham Park
Is parking a problem for fitting in Streatham Park?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Will you travel outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
How long will the kitchen take to fit?
How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Where is the furniture made?
Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Bespoke kitchens in Streatham Park
We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about extra cupboard space and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets.
Around Streatham Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in many Victorian and Edwardian terraces the kitchen sits in a narrow back addition. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site. The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose.
Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Tips worth knowing
A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:
- Allow space to walk round an island
- Tell us about parking during the design visit
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Measure the route into the kitchen
Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.
Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer early. Their work and ours need to fit together, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

How fitting day works
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

Advice
Streatham Park homes and bespoke kitchens
In the area around Streatham Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Streatham Park, Historic England’s list includes Roman Catholic Church of the English Martyrs (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Yew Tree Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 31% of households in the streets around Streatham Park live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Close to Streatham Common? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For a family home near St Leonard's Church of England Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Is bespoke worth it?
Ready-made kitchens are widely available and often cheaper and they suit many newer homes. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. Bespoke is a bigger investment, built around the space you have. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
