A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, sized to what you keep in them. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. Most enquiries start with an island where space allows and room for everything in the kitchen; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Temple Fortune, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. Any capped chimney should stay ventilated, and damp is dealt with before anything is fitted. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Wipe up spills promptly

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is enough.

Damp walls should be dealt with before cabinets are fitted. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Temple Fortune?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brent Cross West station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Larders and dressers
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the room and how you use it.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
