Bespoke kitchens for homes in Lewisham
Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Lewisham, with about 32% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Lewisham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Mercia Grove Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. In Lewisham, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
For families living near St Saviour's Catholic Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. If your home is one of the older houses near St Stephen's Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
Lewisham is in the London Borough of Lewisham, about 1 mile north-west of New Cross. From period terraces to newer flats in Lewisham, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We cover places right across the rest of London.

Bespoke kitchens in Lewisham
Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen that fits an uneven room and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets.
Paint colour has a big effect in a kitchen, particularly one that’s open to the living space. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish from the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site and touched up easily. Whatever your home in Lewisham is like, the choice is yours, and the colour is agreed with you.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

From workshop to your room
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with how you use the kitchen and what isn’t working. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- At the design visit we measure the room and talk through the layout, storage and finish.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
What prompts bespoke kitchens in Lewisham
Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.
Bespoke kitchens can help with:
- Making the most of a galley kitchen
- An island where space allows
- A larder for food and small appliances
- A kitchen planned around your appliances
If you live in a flat close to Lewisham station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you choose who makes it
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Is bespoke worth it?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
What you get with us
- A design visit, then a written quote
- 300+ projects completed
- Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Lewisham
My home in Lewisham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you cover homes near Lewisham station?
Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Is there room for an island in my kitchen?
Yes, where there is space. We measure at the measuring visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors, and suggest another layout if it would crowd the room.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?
Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.
Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Think about how you cook and what you store
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Check there is room around an island before planning one
The appliances you have chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.
Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. We size the spaces around them, so late changes can be tricky.
