About our bespoke kitchens in Lee
Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, planned around what you store. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. If you are living with a larder for food and small appliances and a kitchen that fits an uneven room, kitchens made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
In a house built before 1919, a wall that looks solid may be lath and plaster. Since a large share of homes around Lee are that old, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. Where a wall will not carry the weight, open shelves or tall floor-standing cupboards can take over.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
- We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Advice
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Lee
In the streets around Lee, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Lee, Historic England’s list includes Lee Public Library (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Police Station (Grade II), less than half a mile north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Lewisham included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Lee is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
Living in a block of flats near Lee station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Eltham Palace, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. For a family home near Brindishe Lee School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.
Lee is part of the London Borough of Lewisham, about 2 miles north-west of New Cross. Lee is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Lee is one of 22 places on our list for Lewisham.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Larder and dresser units
Larders and dressers can fill an alcove or end a run in a way standard units cannot.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and normally cost less and they suit many newer homes. Where walls lean and floors slope, they can be hard to fit neatly. Bespoke is a bigger investment, built around the space you have. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Lee
Is Lee in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Lee is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
I live near Lee station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?
No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Can you fit cabinets to walls that aren’t straight?
Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.
