Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

How we make bespoke kitchens for West Heath

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. If your home has an island where space allows and more storage in a small kitchen, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around West Heath, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the walls are often straighter than in a Victorian house, but they’re still measured carefully. Each cabinet is levelled and scribed on site. Other trades do the gas, plumbing and electrics.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving water or waste pipes
  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers

Kitchens in West Heath: local notes

About 73% of the homes in the area around West Heath went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Heath, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bexley is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in West Heath is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If your children go to Hillsgrove Primary School or a school nearby, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. If you live near Lesnes Abbey Woods, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which appeals if you’re staying put. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • Room for everything in the kitchen
  • A kitchen island with room around it

Danson House, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

How to choose a carpenter in London

How it is made

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, made to the space.

Plinths and scribe strips

We use plinths and adjustable feet to level the units on a sloping floor. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in West Heath

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Abbey Wood station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in West Heath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

If the room is big enough, yes. We measure during the design visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
