Bespoke kitchens in St Luke's

Our bespoke kitchens are fitted in St Luke's and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and planning the layout, followed by a quote. Once agreed, the kitchen is made in our workshop and fitted in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan around it. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are extra cupboard space and tall larder storage.

A large share of the homes around St Luke's date from 2000 onwards, and a newer home’s original kitchen may not suit how you cook and live. Cabinets made for your room can take its place, built around your chosen worktop, sink and appliances. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

In a period kitchen, where nothing is quite level, plinths and scribe strips do a lot of quiet work.

Doors and drawer fronts

The style of the doors sets the tone of the kitchen, from simple flat fronts to framed doors.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. Ours are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, so the finish can be repainted later. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

St Luke's homes and bespoke kitchens

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St Luke's went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of St Luke's include Wesley's Chapel (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and The Charterhouse (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in St Luke's is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Mansion House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If you live near Artillery Ground, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For a flat near Old Street station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. It is worth keeping a record of the colours used.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We can’t advise on your lease.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in St Luke's

I live in a flat in St Luke's. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in St Luke's?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How much time does fitting need?

Every kitchen is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
