Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Damp behind units can lead to mould, particularly on external walls.

About our bespoke kitchens in Newbury Park

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls and a central island in a larger kitchen.

An island needs space around it to work, and not every kitchen has that. Around Newbury Park, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and in an extended kitchen there may be space. The space around any island is measured at the design visit. Your plumber and electrician run any services to it.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted kitchen in an older home.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors and drawer fronts can be flat, framed or panelled, painted in a colour you choose.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician. We do not arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh later on.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Tall larder storage

If your children go to Newbury Park Primary School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

What to check before you book

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Real projects you can actually look at

How to choose a carpenter in London

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Newbury Park

Do you cover homes near Seven Kings station?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Newbury Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

How much time does fitting need?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 0.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.
