How we make walk-in wardrobes for Pitshanger

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are separate space for two people’s clothes and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror.

Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. For any home in Pitshanger, those are the first things we note at the measuring visit, and fitted furniture is planned around them. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift as well as the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we have agreed, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Castle Bar Park station?

Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Pitshanger?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit. We plan it during the design visit.

What walk-in wardrobes cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Building a new partition wall
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Electrical work in the room

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Dressing table
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shoe storage
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Barnabas, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

All of London, Ealing included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Pitshanger fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
