How we make bespoke kitchens for Gospel Oak
Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. If your home has a painted kitchen in a colour you choose and more storage in a small kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In a house built before 1919, a wall that looks solid may be lath and plaster. With a large share of the homes around Gospel Oak dating from then, each wall is checked before deciding where heavy cabinets go. Where a wall will not carry the weight, open shelves or tall floor-standing cupboards can take over.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
- At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
- Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.
How to prepare
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Questions from Gospel Oak
How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Gospel Oak?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
My home in Gospel Oak is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
How are bespoke kitchens priced?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Every kitchen is different, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Which worktops and appliances can I have?
The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you have picked. Knowing their sizes early helps, and the quote confirms what’s included.
Before and after fitting day
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- List what needs a home in the kitchen
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
- Think about how the cabinets will get in
- Mention any parking or lift rules
Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.
Think about how the cabinets will get in. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Gospel Oak
About 48% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Gospel Oak went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 58 entries within half a mile of the centre of Gospel Oak. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. In Gospel Oak, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Martin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Highgate Road Chapel, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. For families living near Carlton Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.
