Walk-in wardrobes in Somers Town

About our walk-in wardrobes in Somers Town

Many London homes have a small room that is awkward as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. If your home has a dressing area in part of a bedroom and a built-in dressing table, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a flat, a spare bedroom often doubles as a study or a guest room, and closed storage lets the room change role without clutter. Around Somers Town, most households live in purpose-built flats. We plan the space in front so every door and drawer opens fully.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it instead of a store for odds and ends.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Shelves for shoes and bags

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

How to choose a carpenter in London

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Plan lighting with your electrician

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly on a cooler external wall. Leave a little space behind hanging clothes, so air can circulate.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, and ventilation inside the units helps.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Somers Town

I live in a flat in Somers Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near London Euston station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It’s useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Walk-in wardrobes in Somers Town: local notes

About 32% of the homes in the streets around Somers Town went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The centre of Somers Town is within about a quarter of a mile of the King's Cross and St Pancras Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 77% of households around Somers Town live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Camden as a whole, about 56%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

For a flat near London Euston station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near St Mary and St Pancras Church of England Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
