Fitted home offices in Somers Town: what you get

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with storage below where it helps. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. We will go through the details at the measuring visit in Somers Town. If you are living with a desk in the wrong light and a desk buried under papers, that’s what home offices are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Somers Town, and in a flat, working from home usually means sharing space with something else. Home offices can sit in a recess, a corner of the living room or a bedroom wall. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Home working in Somers Town: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 32% of the housing in the area around Somers Town, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. There are 182 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Somers Town. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Camden included. Vans bringing furniture to Somers Town fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to London Euston station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near St Mary and St Pancras Church of England Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.

Somers Town is part of the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile south-east of St Pancras. Somers Town is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our work takes in places right across Camden, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Design visits and fitting in NW1W, NW1 and W1T work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Euston Road, Duke's Road and Phoenix Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted home offices. Somers Town is near the A400 and A501, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Nearby, we also make fitted home offices in Euston (1 mile south), Kings Cross (1 mile east), Agar Town (1 mile north), Bloomsbury (1 mile south-east) and Fitzrovia (1 mile south-west). Other parts of Camden we cover include Hampstead (3 miles north-west), West Hampstead (3 miles north-west), Greenhill (2 miles north-west), Dartmouth Park (2 miles north), Gospel Oak (2 miles north-west) and Haverstock (2 miles north-west).

What’s near Somers Town

The streets we cover here include those near Prince Arthur pub, UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies and Wellcome Collection and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Somers Town itself: London Euston station. Well-known places in the area include Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital (under half a mile south-east) and People’s Museum Somers Town (close by, under half a mile east). For a walk, there is Primrose Hill and Barnsbury Wood.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Questions from Somers Town

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Somers Town in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Somers Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you add power points to the desk?

We don’t do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. It helps to agree the positions during the design visit.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How is a home office priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

Do you need fitted home offices in Somers Town?

What’s behind you on a call is worth thinking about. Built-in shelves and doors give a tidy backdrop. It is a small detail that many people appreciate.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • Shelving that bows under the load
  • Working at the kitchen table

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Pancras, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the price in Somers Town

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
