How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Kitchens arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
- You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

How we make bespoke kitchens for South Harrow
A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and it suits many period homes. Each dresser is made for its wall and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are making the most of a galley kitchen and cabinets built around the appliances you choose.
Around South Harrow, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. A bespoke kitchen can be planned around the room as it is now.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Harrow?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in South Harrow?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?
No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, and we fit the cabinets.
Will you travel outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Kitchens in South Harrow: local notes
In the streets around South Harrow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. South Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. All of London, Harrow included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in South Harrow. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.
Northolt Manor, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Living in a block of flats near Northolt Park station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near The Welldon Park Academy, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Flats, leases and landlords
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Neither choice is right for every home. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. Where the room is tricky, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is typically worth considering. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
