Kitchens in Harrow on the Hill: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Harrow on the Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Harrow on the Hill, Historic England’s list includes The Old Schools (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north, and The White Cottage (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 47% of homes in the area around Harrow on the Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

If you live near Northwick Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For a family home near St George’s Primary Catholic Voluntary Academy, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. If you live in a flat close to Sudbury Hill Harrow station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Bespoke kitchens in Harrow on the Hill: what you get

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a layout for a small or awkward room and a painted dresser for the kitchen.

Islands only work where there’s room to walk round them. Interwar, semi-detached and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Harrow on the Hill, and some of those kitchens have been opened up enough to take one. We check the clearances at the measuring visit. Your plumber and electrician run any services to it.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
  • Think about how you cook and what you store

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We cannot advise on your lease.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Moving water or waste pipes

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Questions from Harrow on the Hill

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Harrow on the Hill?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Harrow on the Hill?

Yes, Harrow on the Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Harrow and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you’ve picked. It helps to choose them before the design is final, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

How it’s made

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, sized to what you store.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the kitchen is fitted. Chips are simple to touch in.
