Window Seats in South Harrow

In South Harrow, we design window seats around the room you actually have. We design your window seat at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Window seats in South Harrow

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window and the room.
  2. We visit to measure the window and discuss the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. You receive a written quote for the seat we’ve discussed.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we make window seats for South Harrow

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in South Harrow. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a recess under the window doing nothing and toys spread across a bedroom floor.

Around South Harrow, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Making use of awkward spaces in South Harrow

About 45% of the homes in the area around South Harrow went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of South Harrow is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Harrow included. Vans bringing furniture to South Harrow fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

Northolt Manor, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. If you live in a flat close to Northolt Park station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

South Harrow is within the London Borough of Harrow, about 1 mile north of Harrow. Anywhere in South Harrow, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. We list South Harrow among 20 places we cover in Harrow.

We work across HA2, HA1 and UB5. Streets in the area include Park Lane, Grange Road and Dudley Road, and we cover homes on all of them for window seats. Close by, we also work in Roxeth (1 mile north-east), Harrow (1 mile north), Harrow on the Hill (1 mile east), Rayners Lane (1 mile north-west) and Northolt (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Harrow, our area takes in Stanmore (4 miles north-east), Hatch End (3 miles north), Harrow Weald (3 miles north), Wealdstone (2 miles north), Little Stanmore (4 miles north-east) and Greenhill (2 miles north-east).

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Your questions about window seats in South Harrow

Is parking a problem for fitting in South Harrow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you make window seats for homes in South Harrow?

Yes, we work across Harrow, South Harrow included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you don’t have to move the cushion.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What you get with us

  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Scribed to uneven walls

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
